Position Cost Averaging

Hi PCA Fans,

Here is a trade I got today in the Model Portfolio for the ETF, SLV. The I-Shares Sliver Trust.

I do not use the next available trade in that I would be placing a GTC order for them now. I just kind of happen to update it every few days and take the trades when I get them.

Today we got a buy order on the SMH ETF of semiconductors.

This will be the second buy order on the way down for SMH.

Hi PCA Fans.

I got a buy order when I updated my model portfolio today on the GDX ETF.

We started out with 200 shares and now we are adding 25 more at 28.62

The new holding range is…

We’ll have to see where we go from here.

Hi PCA Fans,

Yesterday we got a buy order on QLD, today we got another one. We will be buying 10 more shares at $65.44 for a total buy of $654.40.

This is a good example of why the "next available trade is not always the best idea…

If I had skipped the buy order yesterday, I would be getting a bigger buy order today, at the better price.

Not that "next available trade is a bad idea… just sometimes you’ll end up spending more in commissions this way.

Also important to note is that in an extended run in either direction you are often better off saving up a trade or two..or three to get the better deal.
